I still don't understand why the Winamp folks bothered to write a U3 version, but won't help us get it going. There is clearly a problem with their installer, and it would probably take one of their programmers a day to fix, but apparently that's not going to happen. I'm sure eventually someone will modify another MP3 player for U3. In the meantime, I'll just keep using Windows Media Player.
It's not as slick as Winamp, but at least it runs. I just bought a 2 gb Memorex Mini travel drive and I have the same problem. When I tried to install it the first time there was absolutly nothing except 3 U3 Apps that where already included in my Mini travel drive. So the problem does not occur only on Sandisk devices. Thanks Elmaestro. I've been wondering if it really was limited to Sandisk, but didn't see why it should be.
I've given up on any help from Winamp, though, and have installed Spider player. It's quite good and they have one great feature that Winamp lacks I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I have a SanDisk Micro 2. I tried the one from U3's site and the beta from these forums. Did anyone ever find a solution? Since the Winamp support people won't even give us the courtesy of acknowledging that this thread exists, despite this being the only avenue provided for so-called technical support, I don't think a solution is forthcoming.
Would it be so hard to post a message saying 'we hear you and we've put this on the list for the programmers to look at'? Consequently, I've been forced to find another program to play my music even though I would prefer Winamp. I am following up one other lead, though.
It appears some of the folks who frequent www. A lot like U3, but open source and runs on any flash drive. I'm hoping I can find a way to apply that to my U3 drive. There is nothing magical about a portable version of Winamp.
Except for any file associations in the registry, everything is self contained in the Winamp folder. Copy the folder on over. Find More Posts by Sawg. I got it installed! Now I think there may be something in our computer systems that's causing a conflict with the installation.
I tried to install it on both of my computers numerous times and it didn't work. But they are very similarly configured. Then, today, I was testing both the U3 flash key and another flash key with PortableApps on several computers in my college's computer labs. Just on a chance, I ran the install from U3 Central again and this time it worked. So, for those others who are having problems, try it on as many different systems as you can find until you find one that will install it.
I'm sure if we could compare systems, we'd find something in common, but I'll just settle for having the problem solved for now. After trying to install winamp on different computers i managed to install it in school today.
It even worked. But when i pluged in my Sandisk U3 Micro memorystick Winamp wouldn't start. I get so tired of this crap. And there is no other well-working program for U3 Devices for playing music as far as i know. I discovered the same thing. It all seemed to work, but now whenever I take it back to a computer on which it wouldn't install, it gives the same error message that you mentioned.
So my original pleasure at getting it to work is now replaced with irritation again that the Winamp folks won't do anything about it or even acknowledge that we exist. As far as alternatives go, this one isn't perfect, but it does let you play your tunes for free. There is a free portable media player available at www. Make a software request now! Winamp Comments.
